You've mixed the song.
The vocals sit nicely in the beat. The drums hit. The bass feels right. Everything is balanced.
So...are you finished?
Almost.
There's one final stage before your song is ready for release:
Mastering. π§
Mastering is the final stage of audio production. It's where you take your finished mix and make the final adjustments needed to prepare it for distribution.
That might include adjusting the overall tonal balance, controlling dynamics, increasing perceived loudness, catching problematic peaks, and making sure the finished song translates well across different playback systems.
But mastering is also one of the most misunderstood parts of making music.
It's not simply:
"Make the song louder."
And it's definitely not:
"Throw a limiter on the master and crank it." π
Good mastering is usually about making small, intentional changes that help an already-good mix sound polished, balanced, and ready for release.

Once your mix is finished, you're ready for the final step.

π― 1. Make Sure Your Mix Is Actually Finished
Before you master anything, ask yourself:
Is this really a mastering problem?
This matters because mastering affects the entire stereo mix.
Imagine your hi-hats are way too loud.
You could try fixing them during mastering.
But any EQ adjustment you make to those high frequencies could also affect:
π€ The vocals
πΉ The melodies
π₯ The snare
π The reverb
β¨ The overall brightness of the record
If you still have access to the mix session, the better solution is probably to go back and turn down the hi-hats.
The same applies if:
The vocal is too quiet
The kick is too loud
An ad-lib is distracting
The bass overwhelms the song
The vocal has too much reverb
One instrument is panned incorrectly
Fix mixing problems in the mix whenever possible.
Mastering should enhance the finished recordβnot become an emergency repair session.
Before exporting your mix, listen from beginning to end.
Take notes.
Make your final adjustments.
Then listen again.
Once you're genuinely happy with the mix, move on.
π€ 2. Export a High-Quality Mix for Mastering
Don't spend hours carefully mixing your song and then export a low-quality MP3 to master.
Start with a high-quality, lossless file.
WAV is a common choice.
Ideally, keep your export at the same sample rate and bit depth you've been working at rather than unnecessarily converting formats before mastering.
And most importantly:
π¨ Don't let the mix clip.
If the master output is hitting or exceeding 0 dBFS, lower the level before exporting.
You don't need to make your pre-master artificially loud.
That's what the mastering stage is for.
You may have heard rules saying that every mix needs to peak at exactly -6 dBFS before mastering.
Don't obsess over hitting a magical number.
What matters is having a clean mix with adequate headroom and no unwanted clipping.
If you're sending the song to a mastering engineer, you can also ask whether they have specific delivery preferences.
The cleaner and higher-quality your source file is, the better foundation you're giving yourself for the master. π―
π§ 3. Use Reference Tracks
One of the best mastering tools you can use isn't a plugin.
It's another song.
Pick one or two professionally mastered songs that are stylistically similar to yours.
If you're making melodic trap, reference professionally released melodic trap records.
If you're making R&B, use R&B.
If you're making aggressive rap, compare against records with a similar sound.
Then listen for things like:
Overall loudness
Punch
Low-end balance
Vocal presence
High-end brightness
Stereo width
Dynamics
The goal isn't to make your song sound identical to another artist's record.
You're creating perspective.
When you've listened to the same song for three hours, your ears start adapting to it.
A reference track can quickly reveal:
"Whoa...my song has way too much bass."
Or:
"My master sounds extremely dark compared to everything else."
Or:
"I crushed all the dynamics trying to make mine louder."
π‘ Important: Try to compare your reference and master at similar perceived loudness when evaluating things like EQ and dynamics.
Humans tend to perceive louder audio as sounding better.
If your reference is significantly louder, you might accidentally start making unnecessary changes just because you're reacting to the volume difference.
ποΈ 4. Make Subtle EQ Adjustments
EQ during mastering works on the entire song.
That makes it incredibly powerful.
It also means you need to be careful.
If your entire mix feels muddy, you might make a small adjustment to the low-mid frequencies.
If the master feels slightly dull, you might add a subtle high-frequency boost.
If there's too much low-end energy, you may need to control it.
But mastering EQ is generally not the place for huge corrective moves.
Think:
Small.
Broad.
Intentional.

And that's the mindset you want.
π― Don't EQ because you think mastering requires EQ.
Listen first.
What actually needs to change?
Maybe your mix already has a great tonal balance.
If so, leave it alone.
A plugin doesn't have to be doing something simply because you opened it.
π 5. Be Careful With Mastering Compression
You probably already used compression while mixing your vocals, drums, bass, or other elements.
Compression during mastering works a little differently.
You're now compressing the entire finished mix at once.
That means every decision can affect multiple elements simultaneously.
A mastering compressor can help:
Add cohesion or "glue"
Smooth out dynamics
Control occasional peaks
Change the sense of punch
Increase density
But not every song actually needs mastering compression.
As iZotope explains in its guide to compression in mastering, compression reduces dynamic range, and the trade-off can include reducing transient energy. Whether that's beneficial depends entirely on the song.
This is why mastering compression is often subtle.
You might only need a small amount of gain reduction.
Or none.
π¨ Be particularly careful with your transients.
Over-compressing can take a punchy kick and make it feel flat.
It can remove the impact from a snare.
It can make the entire record feel smallerβeven though your meters tell you it's louder.
Always compare:
Compression ON
vs.
Compression OFF
And try to compare them at similar loudness.
If the compressed version isn't actually improving the record, you don't need it.
π₯ 6. Use Saturation and Other Processing Sparingly
Mastering isn't limited to EQ and compression.
Depending on the song, you might also experiment with:
Saturation
Exciters
Stereo imaging
Dynamic EQ
Multiband compression
Mid/Side processing
Automation
These tools can be extremely powerful.
They can also destroy a perfectly good mix surprisingly quickly. π
For example, subtle saturation can introduce harmonics that make a record feel warmer, richer, brighter, or more energetic.
But push it too far and you may introduce harshness or unwanted distortion.
Stereo imaging can make certain frequencies feel wider.
Push that too far and you can create phase problems or weaken the center of the record.
Multiband compression gives you more control over different frequency ranges.
But if you don't actually have a problem that requires it, you've just made your mastering chain more complicated.
Here's a useful rule:
Know why you're adding a processor before you add it.
If your answer is:
"Because this mastering preset has one..."
That's probably not a good enough reason. π
π 7. Understand Limiting and Loudness
Now we get to the part everyone associates with mastering:
LOUDNESS. π
A limiter is commonly placed near the end of a mastering chain.
Its job is to prevent peaks from exceeding a specified ceiling.
By controlling those peaks, you can increase the overall perceived loudness of the song without allowing the loudest moments to exceed your output ceiling.
Think of it as putting a ceiling over your audio.
The peaks can't go through it.
But here's where people get into trouble:
They keep pushing more and more level into the limiter.
The song gets louder.
So they push harder.
It gets even louder.

But eventually:
The drums lose punch.
The transients disappear.
The bass distorts.
The vocals become harsh.
The entire record starts sounding crushed.
At that point, you haven't made your master better.
You've just made it louder.
A good limiter should help you achieve the loudness you're looking for while preserving the character of the mix.
And just like everything else in mastering, there isn't one limiter setting that works for every song.

Understanding these concepts is much more useful than simply copying somebody else's limiter preset.
π± 8. Don't Chase Streaming Loudness Targets Blindly
You've probably heard something like:
"Spotify wants your song at -14 LUFS."
There's some truth behind that numberβbut it gets misunderstood constantly.
Spotify currently says it normalizes tracks to -14 dB LUFS under its Normal playback setting.
If your master is louder, Spotify can simply turn playback down.
If it's quieter, Spotify may raise the playback level when enough headroom exists.
Spotify also currently recommends keeping masters below -1 dB true peak, and recommends additional true-peak headroom for masters louder than -14 LUFS.
You can read Spotify's official loudness normalization guidelines for the current specifications.
But here's the important part:
That doesn't mean every song should be mastered to exactly -14 LUFS.
Normalization is a playback system, not necessarily a mastering target you must hit.
Different genres have different loudness conventions.
Different songs need different amounts of dynamics.
And different streaming platforms can handle playback differently.
Your goal should be to create a master that sounds good and maintains the character you wantβnot destroy your mix trying to hit one arbitrary number.
Apple takes a similarly quality-focused approach with its Apple Digital Masters program, emphasizing high-quality source masters and giving mastering engineers tools to audition how audio behaves after encoding.
So don't master entirely with your eyes glued to a LUFS meter.
Use the meter as information.
Then use your ears to make the decision. π§
π 9. Check Your Master Everywhere
Your studio headphones aren't where most people will hear your music.
Think about how people actually listen:
AirPods
Car speakers
Phone speakers
Bluetooth speakers
Laptop speakers
Headphones
TVs
Studio monitors
Your master needs to translate across all of them.
That doesn't mean it will sound identical everywhere.
It won't.
A phone speaker can't reproduce low bass like a subwoofer.
That's physics.
What you're checking is whether the important parts of your song still work.
Can you understand the vocal?
Does the bass completely disappear?
Are the hi-hats painfully bright?
Does the vocal become harsh?
Does the kick overwhelm everything in the car?
Does the song sound balanced at low volume?
Check the master in several environments.
Then take notes.
Don't immediately start changing things every time one speaker sounds slightly different.
Look for patterns.
If the bass sounds excessive on your headphones, car speakers, and studio monitors...
You probably have too much bass.
If it only sounds strange on one cheap Bluetooth speaker...
The speaker might be the problem. π
Translation is one of the biggest differences between a master that sounds good in your room and a master that sounds good in the real world.
π¦ 10. Export Your Final Master Correctly
You've done it.
The master sounds balanced.
The loudness feels right.
You've checked it across different systems.
Now save a high-quality final version.
π― Keep a lossless master.
Don't make an MP3 your only final copy.
Formats such as WAV preserve the quality of your master and give you a high-quality source file that can be used for distribution or future conversions.
Streaming services and distributors may create their own versions from the master you submit.
That's another reason you want to give them a high-quality source.
For example, Spotify currently says artists only need to deliver one high-quality stereo master per track, with FLAC preferred and WAV also accepted under its specifications.
And keep your original master archived.
Five years from now, you don't want to discover that the only copy of your finished song is:

Create an organized folder containing your:
Final lossless master
Listening copy
Final mix
Project/session files
Beat/stems
Beat license and other important documentation

Artists sometimes use mixing and mastering interchangeably.
But they're two different stages of the production process.
Here's the simplest way to think about it:

One of the easiest mistakes to make when mastering your own music is thinking you need to do more.
More EQ.
More compression.
More saturation.
More stereo width.
More loudness.
More plugins.
But professional mastering often works in the opposite direction.
What is the smallest change you can make that improves the song?
Maybe that's a subtle EQ adjustment.
Maybe it's a little dynamic control.
Maybe it's limiting.
Maybe the mix already sounds great and barely needs anything.
That's okay.
iZotope's guide to mastering a song from start to finish makes essentially the same point: listen critically, identify what actually needs improvement, and use the fewest tools necessary to get there.
Mastering isn't about proving how many plugins you know how to use.
It's about finishing the record.
And that brings us to the end of the entire process:
Recording β Capture the performance.
Mixing β Build and balance the record.
Mastering β Polish and prepare it for release.
Get those three stages right, and you don't need a million-dollar studio to create music that sounds polished, competitive, and ready for the world.
Then there's only one thing left to do:
Release it. π
